Putin to Wait for Trump Before Ejecting U.S. Diplomats From Russia

Trump takes office on January 20.

CCTV America's Daniel Ryntjes reports.

With the new executive order, Obama's administration has imposed sanctions on two of Russia's leading intelligence services, as well as four individuals directly linked to Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate.

Three prominent USA senators have warned that Russian Federation may face sanctions over the country's alleged interference in the recently concluded presidential election, media report said on Thursday. Yet, Trump also seemed to signal that he would be more open to taking the Russian election hacking concerns more seriously, adding "Nevertheless, in the interest of our country and its great people, I will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of this situation".

The executive order issued by Mr Obama provided additional authority for responding to certain cyber activity that seeks to interfere with or undermine U.S. election processes and institutions, or those of its allies or partners.

President Obama ordered the new measures into effect on Thursday in order to punish Russian Federation for hacking American political networks and interfering with the 2016 election.

But Trump has also faced growing pressure in Congress, including by top Republican lawmakers, who have called for a full inquiry into the extent of Russian hacking.

"In our point of view such actions of the United States current administration are a manifestation of an unpredictable and even aggressive foreign policy", Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin press-secretary told journalists following the announcement by the White House. On Friday, Putin said he would not expel USA diplomats nor impose sanctions.

Needless to say, we anxiously await Trump's tweet on the matter.

Along with last year's hack of the DNC, which caused major embarrassment for the Democratic part and led to the resignation of top DNC officials, Russian Federation is believed to have orchestrated the hack of Hillary Clinton campaign chair John Podesta. Expulsion of diplomats happens all over the world, for reasons including disagreement with a country's policies, antagonistic actions such as the ones Russian Federation is accused of here, or even problems with an individual ambassador.

Russia's Foreign Ministry, for its part, condemned the measures as "one last blow to relations" by the outgoing Obama administration and vowed "if Washington takes new hostile steps, it will receive an answer". "These data theft and disclosure activities could only have been directed by the highest levels of the Russian government", Obama said. They've accused Democrats of seeking to undermine the legitimacy of Trump's election and Trump himself has suggested the culprit might not be Russian Federation. "Today, I have ordered a number of actions in response".

"Frankly speaking, we are exhausted of lies about Russian hackers that continue to be spread in the United States from the very top", said spokesperson Maria Zakharova in a statement.

It added: "In some cases, (the Russian intelligence services') actors masqueraded as third parties, hiding behind false online personas created to cause the victim to misattribute the source of the attack". Several were accused of stealing money from USA financial institutions or hacking the networks of other major companies.
