UFC: Rousey's ex-boyfriend fears for her mental health prior to comeback

The promotion's decision to schedule the fight card on a Friday night instead of the traditional Saturday slot, coupled with Rousey's significantly decreased media presence, raise questions about whether the event will draw as well as expected.

Rousey's greatness was always largely enhanced by the same thing that once made Tiger Woods so risky: An air of invincibility that seemed real to not just the opposition, but to the invincible as well. While this may come as a surprise to some of you reading this piece, we're sure this is a possibility that Ronda herself has considered in the past and is a very serious possibility for her in the future. She's never asked for much. I think the UFC has been doing all the promos for her.

In an attempt to focus exclusively on her training, Rousey, arguably the greatest female mixed-martial arts fighter of all time, has turned down all media requests leading up to her comeback fight. The Brazilian Nunes captured the belt in July with a first-round finish of Miesha Tate at UFC 200.

"Maybe she said 'look, I'll do it under one condition, I'll do it my way'".

Before their face-off in New York, Nunes said Rousey's media boycott was a sign she is "weak mentally as a person".

"Really competitive people, when they lose, they're all 'I want to get back in and do it again, do it again, do it again and prove I can get better'".

You might not know it from the UFC's posters, videos and TV commercials, which are thoroughly dominated by Rousey's glowering face.

"The strengths of Amanda Nunes are kind of the weakness of Ronda Rousey and vice versa. I have a chance to defend my belt against her and show everybody the real champion". Holm showed Rousey can be throw off by footwork, angles and sharp counter-striking, which are all aspects of the fight game that Nunes has the ability to showcase on Friday night.

Rousey's silence has allowed her reemergence to be shrouded in a layer of mystery. The UFC isn't even holding a pre-fight news conference this week. That's the reason the rest of the pay-per-view (PPV) cast has had to do the heavy promotional lifting.

Like any professional athlete, Ronda Rousey sees her sport as her life's work-and she's pretty damn good at it. A total of 13 months spent away from the cage, both repairing her psyche from the loss and preparing her mind and body for an eventual comeback, UFC 207 on December 30 marks the return of the woman who reigned supreme in the UFC's women's bantamweight division far longer than any of her contemporaries have been capable of in her absence.

Although Rousey's name can carry an event on its own, especially after a 13-month layoff and a much-discussed comeback from a brutal title-losing knockout to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November 2015, Nunes has the ability to win and should be placed in a position to maximize her fame and popularity should she beat "Rowdy".
