Steve Smith Sr. Set To Retire After 2016 Season

It looked like an unceremonious ending to his career considering he had announced before that season he was going to call it quits.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith is retiring, which really should surprise no one considering he said he was retiring last season and changed his mind after an injury.

"I'm about 89 percent sure", Smith said with a smile, referencing his jersey number. Smith said his sons still want him to play, but noted his daughter wants him home. My wife supports me whichever way I want to go, my boys want me to still play, but there's a little girl named Baylee Smith who wants her daddy home. Football is a conduit, something that gives you a platform, good and bad, but it gives you an opportunity. Does Steve Smith has more years of football left in him?

Smith will retire as one of 11 players to record more than 1,000 catches and 14,000 yards receiving, according to ESPN.

At age 37, Smith is now the oldest receiver in the league. He has 67 receptions for 765 yards and five touchdowns in 2016. "God winked at me", he said of hanging up his cleats.

Smith was a third round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2001 and he's played the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.

Smith has played 16 seasons in the National Football League and is one of the greatest receivers of his generation.

"I'm going to miss it".

Always a team player, the prolific wide receiver helped lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance back in 2003 while reaching the postseason five times in all.

There have been many football greats to exit the game in recent years. His best season came in 2005 when he had 103 receptions for 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he's a likely Hall of Fame candidate, although he claims he doesn't care whether he gets in or not. "You can see it every Sunday".
