Ana Ivanovic: Former French Open victor retires from tennis aged 29

Ana Ivanovic posted a cryptic message on Twitter on Tuesday, revealing that she will make an announcement on Wednesday. "Pls tune in to my Facebook page tomorrow at 6pm United Kingdom time, where I'll be sharing something important with you live", she posted.

Ivanovic has been battling injury and won just 15 times in 2016.

And despite not being at her peak on the tennis court, Ivanovic was still one of the highest-paid female athletes in the world with endorsements from luxury brands like Rolex and a lifetime deal with Adidas.

"So for myself and for all my fans and all these young girls and boys who might be watching me, I can only play if I can perform to my own high standards".

The star married German footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger a few months ago, and has since been pictured training to get back to full fitness ahead of 2017. Ivanovic began her professional career when she was just 16-years-old, winning her first and only Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2008.

She last made a dent at a major when she reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2015.

"I will also have more time for my philanthropic activities with UNICEF and others and after that, who knows". She lost in the first round of all four tournaments she played in the summer (Wimbledon, the Olympics, Cincinnati and the U.S. Open) and will leave the sport on a five-match losing streak, the first of her 13-year career.

What do you think of Ivanovic's decision?

"I have achieved my dreams and I hope to help others do so as well".

Because of her injury-hit year, she slipped to 63rd in the rankings. "I'm so excited about what comes next".

"Don't be sad, be optimistic alongside me".
