Trump AG Nominee Sessions No Friend to Cannabis

Last week, President-elect Donald Trump said he wants Sessions to be attorney general, in charge of the federal Justice Department - and by extension, federal tolerance for legalized pot.

Some Senate Democrats have already signaled their concerns with Sen.

In 1986, Trump's nominee for Attorney General was viewed by the Senate to be too racist to be the U.S. District Court in Alabama by other Senators in the mid 1980s.

Sessions, a Republican senator from Alabama, was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to oversee the Justice Department.

Grassley appeared to hit back at those accusations, telling reporters that Sessions would be an "even-handed" attorney general and that he believes Republicans and Democrats would give Sessions a fair hearing. "We hope Sen. Sessions or whoever is confirmed as our next attorney general will use federal law enforcement resources to protect our country's citizens, not to defy the laws those citizens have adopted". Roy Blunt, R-Mo., who calls Sessions "a true friend, a respected colleague, and a dedicated public servant" who understands "the federal government and the Constitution that defines it".

One issue is whether the Democratic Senate Caucus will stand together against this nomination and not be tempted to vote for Sessions because of Senate collegiality.

They added, "He will have to be an independent Attorney General who is willing to set aside personal beliefs and political positions in service of larger obligations".

"It is deeply disturbing that Jeff Sessions, who has such a clear animus against so many Americans - including the LGBTQ community, women and people of color - could be charged with running the very system of justice created to protect them", said HRC President Chad Griffin.

After being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, not much radically changed as Sessions pushed against justice reform and immigration reforms, championed mandatory minimums and fought against closing the irrational difference in the penalty between crack and powder cocaine that targets blacks disproportionately. He said Sessions' nomination is important "in real as well as in symbolic terms about where the administration goes and what its enforcement will be to ensure that people have civil rights and civil liberties". Edward Kennedy said about Sessions during the 1986 confirmation.

As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Iowa's senior senator is responsible for setting the hearing date when Sessions will testify before the 20-member committee.

"I think they'd run out of questions after about the first couple of hours", Cornyn said of the Democrats.
