Around 190000 Ducks Cull In Netherlands Due To Bird Flu Outbreak

The destruction of the ducks marked the Netherland's first cull prompted by the H5N8 virus that affected nearly all of the northern Europe.

An outbreak of the H5N8 strain of bird flu has affected three poultry plants in northern Germany, the Associated Press reported Thursday. The Dutch government has not said which strain showed up.

It's been found in wild birds in 12 of Germany's 16 states this year, and in poultry farms in four states.

The Netherlands have now culled 190,000 ducks in an attempt to prevent the H5N8 strain from spreading to more animals.

The virus, H5N8, spreads through direct contact with secretions from infected birds, their feed, etc.

Researchers said bird flu was carried by migrating birds from Asia to Europe and North America via the Arctic.

Public newscaster NOS said tests had indicated that the dead ducks had been killed by an H5N8 variant of the disease, "which is highly infectious for poultry", but not "very unsafe to humans".

The avian flu or avian influenza is an illness caused by any of many different viruses that adapt to birds. No human infections with this virus have ever been reported world-wide. According to the World Health Organization, transmission to humans can not be ruled out, "although the likelihood is low, based on the limited information available to date".

Early this month, Dutch authorities found about 1250 wild birds dead in the Lake Markermeer surroundings near Amsterdam.
