Obama to confront Trump triumph at news conference

Nov 15, 2016, 04:55

In a White House news conference Monday ahead of his last foreign trip as president, Obama reflected on Democrat Hillary Clinton's loss to President-elect Donald Trump in last week's election. He also took a bit of a victory lap, praising his administration for leaving office without a "significant scandal".

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The nation has found a way to cope with perhaps the most historic election the United States has ever endured. Those who didn't vote for him will have to recognize that that's how democracy works.

He said the most important point he made to Trump was the importance of setting up a proficient staffing structure, including the chief of staff, national security adviser and White House counsel.

"My team stands ready to accelerate in the next steps that are required to ensure a smooth transition", Obama said.

In a White House press briefing Monday, Obama says it's not appropriate for him to comment on every Trump appointment.

The leaders of Britain, France, Italy and Spain will also be in Berlin for meetings Friday that are expected to include the ongoing fight against Islamic State, issues related to migration, the situation in Ukraine, and last week's USA election. A series of racially charged incidents have also caused concern among those who have said Trump's candidacy emboldened bigots. Some are about their bromance, but for the most part, they picture Biden suggesting an adorably silly way to prank Donald Trump and Obama facepalming in response.

"I hope it was useful", Obama said.

Obama said he was certain after meeting Trump last week that his successor and longtime political foe was "sincere" about being president for all Americans but also called on the President-elect to reach out to people who felt anxious after the explosive rhetoric of the campaign, including women and minorities. "The American people will judge over the course of the next couple of years whether they like what they see", Obama said. I think it's important for me not to be bigfooting that conversation.

"We will run through the tape with the implementation of those policies, and then the new team will make their own determinations", Rhodes said. "We're going to have to show up everywhere".

He stresses that Democrats "have to compete at a grass roots level". The Republican president-elect has offered few details of his plans for dealing with the rest of the world even as he cast himself as an opponent of existing trade agreements, the Iran nuclear deal and much of Obama's military strategy.

The presser takes place before the president heads to Greece, Germany and Peru in what will be his final foreign trip in office. Obama will publicly confront the likelihood that the USA will back out of the massive Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal he spent years pushing.

European leaders fear "the Trump effect", she said, and "are very anxious because the same populist, nationalist expressions, whether that's on immigration, whether that is on free trade, has certainly been running very strong political currents within Europe".
