UN Controversially Names Wonder Woman As Honorary Ambassador

Oct 25, 2016, 00:33

"She has been known for her commitment to justice, peace and equality". As part of this honor, Wonder Woman will be featured in a campaign to push gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

Carter recalled being cast in her signature role more than 40 years ago.

"Having strong (living, breathing) female role models is a critical aspect of the goal of empowerment of women and girls", the petition continues. Outside the United Nations, angry protestors gathered, including some United Nations officials carrying signs that read, "I am not a mascot".

The group of approximately 100 demonstrators chanted and carried signs at the United Nations that read "I am not a mascot" and "Let's get real".

"Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but also a foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world, and Wonder Woman will be another valuable partner for us to achieve such a world by inspiring her millions of fans worldwide to stand up for gender equality", EFE news quoted the United Nations under-secretary-general for communications and public information Spain's Cristina Gallach as saying.

Critics hit out at the appointment, calling for real-life heroines to be chosen instead and about 50 United Nations staff members silently turned their back to the stage during the ceremony in NY. Goal 5 is one of 17 goals set by the United Nations in 2015 to achieve a prosperous, protected planet.

But young fans at the event seemed unfazed by the controversy. I know this because she lives in me.

The choice of Wonder Woman has been met with opposition - but it has nothing to do with Gal Gadot being Israeli. "Carter then pointed out how very few women-driven shows existed on TV when Wonder Woman came out". Regardless of how one may have felt about the choice of a fictional superhero to be named an honorary ambassador, it was hard not to be moved by the powerful messages from the women in attendance and, perhaps more importantly, the sight of dozens of young girls with faces lit up as they hung on every word.

Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment said at a ceremony appointing Wonder Woman as the ambassador, reports the Guardian. She will front a campaign with the theme: "Think of all the wonders we can do".

"I wish I could use my lasso of truth".

In the comic books, she is a warrior princess going under the secret identity of Diana Prince.

American psychologist William Moulton Marston who created the character has said he believed women were superior to men and supported the women's suffragette movement. She returns to civilization with him, where she fights evil and injustice.

NEWS: Can Lynda Carter Save "Wonder Woman"? She was the superhero who could make the cover of Ms. magazine, yet still draw fire for her attire. As the opening remarks began, they all stood in silence, one fist raised, to protest the designation of Wonder Woman as Honorary Ambassador. The hope is that she can be someone for women and girls of all races can admire. Wonder Woman helped revolutionize how women were represented in the media.

"Wonder Woman seeks to promote strength, wisdom, leadership, justice, and love", said Gadot.
