Moscow slams growing USA 'pressure' on its diplomats

The American was identified by the State Department as an accredited diplomat, and said he had shown his identification to the guard under normal procedure.

They tried to get blood tests done to determine the precise drug that had been used but the electricity went out at the clinic so samples couldn't be taken.

The Washington post reported this summer that us diplomats in Russian Federation had furniture re-arranged in their homes and said one diplomat reported someone defecated on his living room floor.

At the same time, US State Department accusations against Russia on the alleged harassment of US diplomats are false and are an attempt to divert attention from cases of the United States kidnapping Russian nationals around the world, Sergey Ryabkov added.

Riabkov also accused Washington of carrying out "intense espionage activities" in Russia under diplomatic cover, saying the U.S. military attache in Moscow was regularly seen in proximity to Russian strategic military sites.

After the June incident, a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said: "The more the U.S. damages relations, the harder it will be for USA diplomats to work in Russia".

During Barack Obama's first term, Russian agents reportedly broke in and killed the dog of a USA defense attache in Moscow. Officials have returned home to find water faucets left running and, in two cases, human excrement on their floors.

The issue of US diplomats and journalists being harassed by Russian and Soviet intelligence agencies dates back decades, though with varying degrees of seriousness.

However, officials have suggested the investigation was hampered by Russian intelligence.

But nearly all of the known complaints involving diplomats have been about harassment rather than physical harm.

Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau, a press officer at the State Department, said during a press conference Monday that she would not comment on the specifics of the reported incident but said "we are troubled; we remain troubled by the way our diplomatic and consular staff have been treated over the past two years". While struggling with the Russian, the American managed to inch toward the door and crawl into the safe harbor of US turf.

In June, an American diplomat was tackled by a Russian guard, as he tried to enter the US embassy in Moscow.

If Putin's government is harassing American diplomats, what's his message? "In particular, the harassment and surveillance of our diplomatic personnel in Moscow by security personnel and traffic police has increased significantly".

The incident was captured on video, and the footage was later aired on Russian television.

"Our diplomats are constantly coming up against provocations from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency, who conduct unacceptable measures against them, including psychological pressure in the presence of their families", Zakharova told a briefing in Moscow on June 28.
