Clutch putt clinches Lydia Ko's silver

Aug 21, 2016, 01:39

Two strokes back to begin the final round, Lydia Ko's gold medal hopes were quickly dashed on Saturday when eventual Olympic champion Inbee Park began her day with three birdies in her first five holes and made the turn six strokes clear of the field.

World number one Lydia Ko shot up the leaderboard on Friday after a sublime third round put her right in contention for the gold medal.

Ko obliged by easing her ball to within three metres of the pin and sinking a putt which teetered like a funambulist in a gusty southerly on the cup rim. The Kiwi used a 9-iron from 135 yards on the 15th hole to make eagle in the opening round.

And she's never had a hole-in-one?

"This is the first one in practice rounds or tournaments included, and I nearly didn't know how to react".

"Ever since '09, I was only 12 then, I've imagined myself to be able to represent New Zealand at the Olympics, " Ko said.

"I shot one over on the front nine the past two days so shooting seven shots lower is not a bad thing".

"Coming down the stretch I tried to play a little more aggressively and that worked in my favor coming down on 16", said Ko, who drove the green on the short par-4 and two-putted for birdie. I think I've done a good job of putting myself in there and still having the chance to be standing on that podium, and just to see some putts go in was really good. "I think I might have to shower with it".

Tomorrow the plan doesn't really differ for the two-time major victor as a gold medal sits on the line. At a Tuesday news conference, Piller got emotional just talking about the idea of getting on the medal stand.

"I had a (score of) six under in my head and to have done that is really cool", Ko added. Sometimes you can get carried away about what somebody else is doing. And I know that it doesn't rust; or at least we're going to try it.

"It was the flawless shot at the ideal time and, to do that at the Olympics, it does not get any better than that".

"Either way I'm just going to enjoy it. And as I say, a girl who seems to be very mature as a golfer".
