Air strike hits Syrian maternity hospital

According to charity group Save the Children, an airstrike hit one of their maternity hospitals in northern Syria's Idlib Province, killing two people and wounding several others.

A maternity hospital in Syria has been bombed in a shameful and illegal act that sent babies crashing to the floor in their incubators, Save the Children says.

There were 340 babies delivered there last month.

Quoting sources on the ground, it said a jihadist from Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, who was going to visit his wife in the hospital, was killed in the raid.

It is unclear who is responsible for the raid, but the area is under rebel control and the subject of Russian and Syrian government assaults.

This image released by Save The Children shows a maternity hospital it supports in an opposition-held Idlib in northern Syria after it was bombed.

At the time of the bombing, two operations were under way and a woman was in labour, a statement said.

Amnesty International said the strike "appears to be part of a despicable pattern of unlawful attacks deliberately targeting medical facilities" across Syria and a "potential war crime". On Thursday, a powerful extremist group called the Nusra Front said it changed its name and claimed that it is severing ties with al-Qaida, a move that has the potential to complicate US military efforts in the country.

The Syrian Observatory said on Friday that seven children were among the 28 killed in the coalition air strike on al-Ghandour village near Manbij.

"Syria and Russian Federation must end attacks on hospitals and medical facilities". Two people were killed in the attack.
