2nd officer shot expected to survive

Jul 31, 2016, 01:08

The last two San Diego police officers slain in the line of duty were Christopher Wilson and Jeremy Henwood. One suspect was also shot and is in custody at the hospital, where he is being treated for injuries.

Meanwhile, San Diego police SWAT officers are storming a house, just half a mile from the shooting, after hours surrounding the house and calling for someone inside named "Marcus" to surrender.

One of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the the upper body, Zimmerman said.

The chief lamented recent increases in violence against police officers across the country.

The officer who died was a 16-year veteran.

San Diego's police chief says the second of two police officers shot is expected to survive.

The incident comes as police departments across the United States are on high alert in the wake of fatal ambushes in Dallas and Baton Rouge earlier this month that left eight police officers dead. Immediately after, they called for emergency cover.

"We're talking very, very quickly".

Both men were wounded despite wearing bulletproof vests.

Zimmerman said it was unknown whether the San Diego attack was premeditated.

Officers Kepner said targeted violence towards police keeps him on the look out for potential threats while patrolling. Each day officers risk their lives to keep our communities safe and Officer DeGuzman's courageous service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

"As we remember Officer DeGuzman, we also hold the men and women of the entire San Diego Police Department in our thoughts and prayers, especially Officer Wade Irwin, who was gravely injured last night".

Zimmerman says Cassani was arrested outside a house that SWAT had surrounded for hours.

One suspect in the shooting was shot and seriously wounded. The police chief says he's expected to survive. A suspect is in custody, police tweeted.

Police are trying to determine if anyone else was involved in the shooting in southern San Diego and asked residents nearby to stay inside as they searched. A helicopter hovered above.

Authorities detonated several devices at the scene that made deafening booms. The deceased officer had two children. The possible suspect wasn't there either.

"'The investigation is ongoing right now as to exactly what happened", Zimmerman told reporters at an early morning briefing outside Scripps Mercy Hospital.

"I can tell you he is a loving, caring husband, father". Talked about his family all the time'. He cared - he came to work every single day just wanting to make a positive difference in the lives of our community.

Jonathan DeGuzman and his colleague, Wade Irwin, were shot in the California city after a man opened fire during what is believed to be a traffic stop.
