Weather Service warns of flash flooding in Wisconsin

"Between 6 and 9 inches of rain have fallen, and additional rainfall of at least 2 to 4 inches is expected through 2 a.m., which will result in continued flooding through the overnight".

Radar estimates say Ashland got about 5 inches of rain in a short amount of time.

"Do not drive into areas where water covers the road under any circumstances!" the weather service emphasized.

The National Weather Service is expecting potentially catastrophic flooding in and around the Brainerd Lakes area, Aitkin County, Pine County, and much of northwestern Wisconsin. Sections of U.S. Highway 2 and state Highway 13 south of Highbridge were closed Tuesday. In a Baxter industrial park, a foot of water covered the roadways.

Travel is not advised, however, if you must travel, use caution.

The Mississippi River was expected to reach 17.9 feet by 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12.

At that height, pumping will begin at the wastewater treatment plant, sandbagging starts at the Aitkin City transformer and water will top the levees on the north side of the city, the National Weather Service says.

They were watching the rivers rise in locations such as Fort Ripley and Aitkin, where they were expected to be above flood stage.

City officials were going to continue monitoring the situation overnight.

While a flash flood warning is canceled, flooding is still possible over the next two days. "We wanted to be sure that we are as ready as we can be".

The Ashland County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday that "there are still risky areas everywhere in the county".

CBS Duluth affiliate KDLH-TV reported late Monday night that strong storms were dumping heavy rain and causing serious flooding across the region.

While there was some wind damage in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, a more severe storm struck to the west.
