'I'm not a Blairite, Brownite or Corbynista', says Eagle

Mr Smith also claimed the shadow chancellor has said he was prepared to see the party split: "If that's what it takes".

An official from the party said: "It's probably fair to say that the majority of the Labour members in Stroud back Jeremy Corbyn".

Some Labour lawmakers fear Corbyn, who spent three decades on the hard-left fringe of the party before a surprise wave of grassroots enthusiasm swept him to victory in a leadership contest last September, will be voted back in by the party membership if he makes it on to the ballot.

"The parliamentary labour party have an obligation to their people on the ground to respect that and to maintain a united party", he continued.

Labour's ruling National Executive Committee also has to to decide this week whether the party leader must be re-nominated by MPs in order to run in the event of a challenge to his leadership.

She is expected to be accompanied at the official launch by Hilary Benn, previously shadow foreign secretary. "I'm here to win".

She will be introduced at her launch by Labour's former interim leader, Harriet Harman, who will declare: "Angela is all about Labour's team winning for working people".

In a statement to PinkNews, she said: "On 11th July 2016, I announced my decision to stand for the leadership of the Labour Party".

Deputy leader Tom Watson's spokesman said the NEC is considering Labour-commissioned advice which states that Mr Corbyn should not be given "special treatment" and will need to get the nominations. They were angered by Corbyn's lackluster support, during the In-Our referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union, for remaining in Europe.

Mr Corbyn told BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend he was happy to meet Mr Smith and said: "I'm not splitting anything".

Mr. Corbyn and his supporters have argued that, as the incumbent, he should automatically be put on the ballot. And I wouldn't do this if I didn't think I would be a good prime minister for Britain.

"We've all stood on the shoulders of what Labour governments in the past have done -if we're not in government we can't spread those chances around our society more widely".

A Labour spokesman said: "The timetable for the contest for the leader of the Labour Party has been agreed by the NEC and will commence on Thursday".

Asked if her persona was "too gloomy" to lead the party, Ms Eagle said: "Well, we all have our moments".

The former shadow Business Secretary said that last month's vote for Brexit had been a "howl of pain" from people who felt their leaders no longer listened to them.
