Man shot in run-in with Toms River officers

A man was shot after allegedly pulling a gun on police in Toms River overnight, authorities say.

Toms River police say officers approached a suspicious vehicle that was occupied by the man, a local resident.

Sauers, 29, of Toms River, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful goal and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to the police report.

Timothy Sauers, 29, of Hightstown Lane, was shot by the officers, then fled over a concrete bulkhead and jumped into the Toms River, where Tactical Response Officers found him about an hour after 11:32 p.m. incident. His condition and name have not been released.

An investigation will be led by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office. Sauers was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, Della Fave said.

No officers were injured and it has not yet been revealed what charges Sauers now faces. Authorities in Dallas say snipers opened fire on police officers during a protest in Dallas over the shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota on Wednesday night that killed two black men during traffic stops.

The shooting occurred on a day fraught with tension over police-involved shootings.
