Rays lose 5-1 to Giants on Pride Night before 40135 fans
The announced attendance of 40,135 for the Rays' game against the San Francisco Giants was the first regular-season turnout of more than 40,000 at the ballpark since Opening Day in 2006 against Baltimore (40,199).
Both teams stood on the field during a moving video tribute and observed a moment of silence before the first pitch while the names of the 49 shooting victims scrolled on the video board.
The Rays announced that all ticket sale proceeds will go to the Pulse Victims Fund. They have now lost consecutive games on the heels of a three-game winning streak, and are still in search of one more win to finish this nine-game homestand with a winning record. Buster Posey went 8-for-12 with three RBIs as the Giants (41-26) swept three contests from Milwaukee earlier in the week to push their winning streak to five and improve to a season-best 15 games over.500.Jeff Samardzija goes to the mound for San Francisco with an unimpressive 2-8 record and 5.46 ERA in interleague play, but can become the team's third eight-game victor on Friday. "It is just a tragedy what happened, and to see how people came together, united and poured out their hearts for what happened in Orlando, it really made it a special night".
Samardzija (8-4) held the Rays to four hits after failing to win his previous three starts. Brandon Crawford, facing an 0-2 count, battled back to 2-2 and hit a two-run double to left center for a 2-0 Giants lead. He settled for his sixth complete game, getting Evan Longoria - the last batter that Bruce Bochy would've allowed him to face - to ground out on his 115th and final pitch.
"The guy had our number", Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "It's about people feeling connected and supportive".
Members of the Tampa Bay Rays wear "We Are Orlando" T-shirts as the ballclub honored the victims of the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., on June 12. But Crawford didn't chase the next two sliders, and when he finally got a fastball on the outer edge, he split the outfielders in left-center for a two-run double. Belt hit a solo drive in the seventh.
The Giants placed closer Santiago Casilla on the paternity list while he and his wife await the birth of a girl. The club recalled left-hander Steven Okert to take Casilla s place on the roster.
Rays: 3B Joshua Lowe, the Rays' 2016 first-round draft pick from Pope High School in Georgia, signed and will begin his pro career with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Rays. RHP Ryan Garton was optioned to the International League club Thursday.
The Giants are still listing Jake Peavy as Saturday s starter and TBA on Sunday in what would be Matt Cain s slot, but as I ve written, that could change.
The Rays are donating proceeds from Friday's game to support the victims of the shooting.
