The real Serena finally shows up but it's all in vain

Standing between world number one Serena Williams and her 22nd Grand Slam title at Roland Garros on Saturday is rising star Garbine Muguruza.

"Last year, I think you can't underestimate how much those three majors took out of Serena and obviously she was chasing two massive parts of history in trying to win all four majors, and as every major went by the pressure got more intense. I think at the end of the day I didn't play the game I needed to play to win and she did", said Williams.

"Of course I want to say thank you to my team, my coach, everyone there [in the players' box], my family, for sure". "Definitely, I agree 100 per cent: If she plays like this, she's not going to win, " said Williams' coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

Garbine Muguruza got the first break of serve in her French Open final against Serena Williams.

In winning her first major, Muguruza used her powerful groundstrokes to keep No. 1 Williams off-balance and overcame signs of nerves in the form of nine double-faults to pull off the surprise.

After a run of breaks gave Muguruza the first set and a lead in the second, Williams never recovered. She wields a thunderclap of a forehand and possesses an aggressive style that has helped her all but sail into the French Open finals over the past two weeks.

Muguruza won all six points of 10 shots or more in the first set and, indeed, there was no junkballing on this day.

If the blips Williams suffered en route to laboured wins in her last two matches resurface, the 22-year-old Muguruza is well placed to take advantage.

"My dream is to continue and win more tournaments, similar tournaments, and to dominate", the Venezuela-born Muguruza told reporters after her 7-5 6-4 victory on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The common trend throughout the match was that both players wanted to attack the other's second serve.

Muguruza, not fazed one iota by missing her chances to close out the match, served it out to love, 6-4, by dropping a final lob onto the baseline.

Williams finished with 39 forced errors, 18 more than Muguruza.

"But I think I'm going to fight for each point".

In the ensuing game, with Bertens serving at 30-15, Williams got some luck: Her return hit the net and dropped over for a net-cord victor.

"Earlier in the tournament Williams appeared to view the landmark with indifference, telling reporters on Friday "(there's) nothing I can do about it".

But the 58th-ranked player in the world has withstood more threatening health scares in the past. And Williams has shown vulnerability in her last two majors, falling to Roberta Vinci and Angelique Kerber at the U.S. Open and Australian Open, respectively.

The twelfth game was huge as Muguruza save two break points, one with an ace, and then finally claimed her third set point with a backhand fired deep into the corner.

Ahead of her French Open victory, Garbine Muguruza had said tennis fans seem ready for new faces at the top of women's tennis after the long domination by Serena Williams. Williams said. "Today Garbiñe played unbelievable".

She won 20 of 35 points played on Williams' second serve and broke serve four times.

The 22-year-old Muguruza is playing in her second Grand Slam final after losing to Serena in the 2015 Wimbledon final.
