Minutes Correspondent Morley Safer Dead At 84

He turned his attention to Asia a year later to open a Saigon bureau as the Vietnam War raged on. He joined the CBS program in 1970, just two years after it launched, and worked there ever since, contributing 919 reports over the years.

Safer was a last link to the original core of 60 Minutes.

CBS News says Safer, who was in declining health, died Thursday at his home in Manhattan. Safer became one of the first reporters for a USA network news organization to broadcast from inside Mao Zedong's Communist China.

Morley Safer reminded us of the power of courageous storytelling to help our country decide the right course.

His passing comes just days after he signed off for the last time on the news magazine show on Sunday. One of Safer's most celebrated stories came within that run, showing how a Texas man named Lenell Geter was serving life for an armed robbery in Texas.

Safer, who was born in Toronto, remained a Canadian citizen but lived in New York City with his wife Jane Fearer.

During his 61-year career, Safer "changed war reporting forever" as a correspondent during the Vietnam War before becoming "the iconic "60 Minutes" correspondent", CBS News reported. In 1964, he began working for CBS in its London news bureau.

As the 1970s began, Safer became part of an American journalism institution by joining the 60 Minutes team - a team that also included at various times such esteemed journalists and Harry Reasoner, Dan Rather, Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Lesley Stahl, Don Hewitt, Andy Rooney and Steve Kroft.

By 2006 Safer had reduced his output.
