Timberwolves' Towns is unanimous Rookie of the Year pick

The NBA today announced Minnesota Timberwolves forward/center Karl-Anthony Towns is the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb trophy as the victor of the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Among players coached by UK's John Calipari, former Memphis standouts Derrick Rose (2009) and Tyreke Evans (2010) previously were NBA Rookie of the Year winners.

Towns, the first overall pick in the 2015 Draft, put up 18.1 points, 10.7 rebounds and swatted away 1.7 shot attempts a night.

Karl-Anthony Towns has been voted as the unanimous victor of the NBA Rookie of the Year award. Earlier in the season, Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant stated that he believed that Towns is going to be in the hall of fame some day. He also ranked third in the National Basketball Association in double-doubles (51) and eighth in field-goal percentage (54.2).

Towns posted the best rookie season by a big man since Tim Duncan.

The future is bright for Towns and by proxy for the Timberwolves.

From a panel of 130 sportswriters and sports broadcasters, Towns received all the first-place votes to finish up with 650 points, followed up in second by New York Knicks' Kristaps Porzingis (363 points) and in third by Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokic (59 points).

Porzingis, 20, the fourth overall pick past year, averaged 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks while securing 21 double-doubles.

Towns was named the Rookie of the Year after setting Minnesota franchise rookie records in 2015-16.
