Two Cairo courts have convicted and sentenced to five years in jailmore than 100 protesters for taking part in peaceful, anti-government demonstrations last month, officials said on Sunday.

Defence lawyers Hossam al-Khadrawy and Ahmed Abdel-Latif confirmed the verdict, which they said can be appealed. He said most of the defendants were aged between 20 and 25 and that many had been arrested arbitrarily by the police as they were out on the streets or in cafes but not taking part in any demonstration. On Saturday, he heard the defense arguments for eight hours before he held a 15-minute recess and returned to the bench to announce the verdict, said Othman, who attended both hearings.

Egypt has denied police were involved in Regeni's death.

Scores of young pro-democracy activists have also been imprisoned since Morsi's ouster.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has inaugurated a slew of developmental projects, including over 8,000 social housing units as well as water treatment and sanitation projects, across the country.

El-Sissi insists the islands belong to the Saudis and has angrily demanded an end to public criticism of the deal. However, the islands deal and a steep rise in prices, primarily food and utilities, are cutting into his popularity.
