Lawyer: Dividing Prince estate may be difficult

Tyka Nelson has asked for a special administrator to be appointed to oversee the musician's estate after his body was found at his Paisley Park home near Minneapolis on Thursday.

"I do not know of the existence of a will and have no reason to believe that the decedent executed testamentary documents in any form", she wrote.

Tyka Nelson, Prince's sister, said Tuesday that her brother didn't have a will when he died. The court documents say Bremer Bank provided financial services to Prince for many years.

According to Billboard, Prince is estimated to have $27 million in property and, even though his cash situation is rumored to have been tight, there is the potential for millions in income from the new found interest in the marketplace in his music.

Prince died on Thursday in Minnesota at the age of 57. An autopsy was done Friday, but authorities have not released a cause of death and have said results could take days or weeks.

He said the administrator's first job would be to ascertain all of Prince's assets, paying any debts he owed and paying taxes.

Prince's full sister Tyka is two years younger than her brother. His record sales have gone through the roof since his death, the Prince catalog of songs are untapped for licencing (something Prince refused to do when he was alive) AND there's a supposed vault filled with decades of unreleased music, which is why a former manager told USAToday that he estimates the estate value at half a billion dollars. But it has only been a few days since Prince's death, and anything can happen.

A lawyer for two of Prince's late siblings, Lorna and Duane Nelson (who died in 2006 and 2011, respectively), said both spoke with him about Prince's dependency on Percocet and cocaine, but others close to the musician - including McMillan, Shelia E. and his driver - denied any rumors of substance abuse.

Presumably, by now a lawyer would have come forward if Prince had drafted a trust.

The Saturday before he died Prince held a dance party in the Paisley Park auditorium, according to CBS Minnesota.

Hopkins, the Minnesota attorney, predicted a long, drawn-out case over Prince's assets, probably lasting years.

Wealthy people usually create trusts to avoid the public spectacle of probate court, and it would be unusual if Prince had not done so, according to Irwin Feinberg, a Los Angeles trust and probate lawyer who spoke do the AP before Nelson filed her court documents. The L.A. Times and the website Celebrity Net Worth, put it at $300 million, while TMZ estimate it may be less than half that, with allegations that Prince had been having money problems in recent years.
