NY primary: Early exit poll results

Apr 20, 2016, 03:25

Voting opened Tuesday in the most raucous nominating contest of an already wild campaign season, making NY a coveted prize for both delegates and bragging rights that were expected to strengthen the trajectory of the two front-runners.

Opinion polls show Trump has a double-digit lead in NY, where the "winner takes most" primary carries 95 delegates, over his closest challenger, Ted Cruz.

"We are looking forward to a big turnout tomorrow and we're hoping that we will be able to mark tomorrow as the day when NY once again actually charted our destiny because giving a big vote, creating the kind of positive support that I know is possible here will send a very loud message to everyone", Clinton said while campaigning in Manhattan on Monday. Plus 10.1% is my maximum range for Clinton, in which case she would win the delegate count by perhaps as many as 35. Trump also leads in "How to vote for" with Cruz and Kasich behind.

Whereas Donald Trump, who was born in the New York City borough of Queens, lives in a building bearing his name in midtown Manhattan. Including superdelegates-party leaders and officials who are free to change their support the former secretary of state leads the delegate race 1,758 to 1,076, according to an Associated Press tally.

"I love NY, and this has been a joy during the last two weeks to be here", she said. Betting markets still place Trump ahead, however. If the race isn't settled by then, he faces the very real prospect of losing to Ted Cruz, whose campaign is mastering the complicated process of lining up individual delegates who could shift their support to the Texas senator after the first round of convention balloting.

But it's the 81 delegates awarded proportionally based on congressional districts - three in each - that could get interesting. Republicans and unaffiliated voters agree but not quite as strongly.

Despite polls showing the billionaire businessman ahead by as much as 30 points, the Trump campaign kept up a busy schedule with appearances late Monday in Western New York.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani says he is endorsing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for president, but he's not playing a role in the campaign. Frontrunners Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton lead the pack on both sides, and the closed primary means all of the voters will be registered Republicans and Democrats. Bernie Sanders turned tense in NY.

"If I've made a fool of myself with all of this (see my projections for Arizona, South Carolina, and, to a lesser extent, four out of five March 15th contests), I'll have a final post acknowledging the fact and turn my attention elsewhere". She is faring better with another demographic, however. Clinton has never trailed in a poll in the NY primary. Meanwhile, John Kasich is grabbing recorders from journalists who are asking how he expects to win the nomination having only won one contest. Earlier this month, he lost the Wisconsin primary to Cruz amid a series of controversies over women's issues that many critics hoped represented a break in the wave of populist momentum buying his candidacy.

"It shouldn't be so hard", Cantalupo said, summing up his failure to become a Democrat in time to cast a ballot for Sanders on Tuesday.
