'Batman vs. Superman' still number one at box office

"Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice" has been condemned by critics everywhere and it just experienced a terrible ticket sales drop in its second week in theaters, but there is still hope for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

Warner Bros. has been rather successful seeing as Batman v Superman has as of this writing made $587 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, and it's looking like the film will end its run between $350-370 million and $800-1 billion worldwide. This gives the film a total of $224.4 million to date.

With nearly $276 million at the domestic box office, this week "Zootopia" has pushed past "Shrek", "Monsters University" and a few others to take the 12th spot on the all-time animation box office list.

Superman has grossed $261.5 million in just 10 days; worldwide it's approaching $600 million.

Even with the box office slide, Batman v Superman continues to do good business.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is one of the largest action blockbusters ever depicting the unlikely confrontation between the two famous superhero characters Batman and Superman.

The latest spoof film (this time of the Purge films), Meet the Blacks, debuted with a rough critical and financial launch, earning an estimated $4.1 million.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a stellar opening weekend across the world.

As for the holdovers, Zootopia had another solid weekend, adding $20 million to its total.

In a recent interview with Forbes, "Batman v Superman" director Zack Snyder shared the motivation behind the scene. Should Warner Bros.be concerned about the DCEU's future in China?

Among indie films, Bleecker Street expanded the drone thriller "Eye in the Sky" from 123 theaters to 1,029, picking up $4 million. And while a $52 million weekend is impressive for most films, unfortunately, this is not most films.

Nia Vardalos' My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 held strong with $11.1 million and third place in its second weekend, which brings its total to $36.5 million.

Rounding out the Top 5 films is another faith-based movie, "Miracles From Heaven", starring Jennifer Garner.

Limited release openings like Richard Linklater's college baseball comedy "Everybody Wants Some!!" did well bringing in $323,000 from 19 theaters, while Don Cheadle's Miles Davis biopic "Miles Ahead" launched in four theaters to $122,751.
