Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke dies aged 69
Her career wasn't just limited to film and television eith as she also had an impressive career on Broadway. At age 16 the actress recreated the role for the big screen and won an Academy Award. Between 1963 and 1966, she played identical cousins in a sitcom, The Patty Duke Show and earned an Emmie nomination. By 8 years old, she was largely under the control of husband-and-wife talent managers who kept her busy on soap operas and advertising displays. She won three Emmy awards for TV roles, including a reprised Miracle Worker in 1979 in which she played Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller's teacher, and Helen was played by Melissa Gilbert. After Sean Astin posted a poignant tribute to his mother on Facebook to announce her death to fans, the actor revealed that he plans to continue her work as a mental health advocate.
Duke also penned an autobiography, 'Call Me Anna, ' that was turned into a 1990 TV movie in which the mother of three played herself. She is survived by husband Michael Pierce and son Sean Astin, whose father was her third spouse, actor John Astin.
They moved to Idaho and adopted a son, Kevin.
