Oscar Winning Actress Patty Duke Died At 69

The courage that a teenage Patty Duke portrayed on-screen as Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker" was breathtaking and Oscar-winning.

Stubbs & Associates, the agency that represented her stated that the actress died of sepsis from a ruptured intestine. Sean also said he had talked with his mother about how her mission of mental health advocacy might continue after her death. She also won two Golden Globes, one for Most Promising Newcomer in 1963 and another for her role in Me, Natalie in 1970.

Born Anna Marie Duke on December 14, 1946, she had an unhappy childhood, was abused by her parents, and, by age 8, was largely under the control of managers who supplied the young actress with alcohol and prescription drugs.

Duke also starred in The Patty Duke Show in the 1960s in which she took the roles of "identical" teenage cousins. And she'll be remembered for a long, brilliant career in theater, film, and television, as well as for her mental health advocacy after she revealed in her 1987 autobiography Call Me Anna that she had bipolar disorder (which was then called "manic depression.").

Duke is survived by her fourth husband, Michael Pearce, and her three children Sean Astin, Mackenzie Astin and Kevin Pearce.

Patty Duke roared into acting at the tender age of 12 in 1959 in her role as deaf and blind Helen Keller in the Broadway play The Miracle Worker.

In 1982, Patty was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, an obstacle she was able to overcome through medication and therapy.

The 45-year-old actor, who is best known for appearing in "The Goonies" and the "Lord of the Rings" franchise, wrote "I love you mom" and later updated the post with his family's official statement. Then there was her frequently disrupted love life, dating and sometimes marrying the likes of Harry Falk, Desi Arnaz Jr., John Astin and Michael Tell. We celebrate the infinite love and compassion she shared through her work and throughout her life'.

She met fellow actor Patrick Treadway in 1999 and developed a friendship while doing Community Theater. After her marriage, Duke used the name Anna Duke-Pearce in her writings and other professional work. Patty Duke made the Top 40 hits twice in 1965 with her songs "Don't Just Stand There" and "Say Something Funny".
