Elway, Broncos Trade For Quarterback Mark Sanchez

The agreement came on a day the Denver Broncos lost Brock Osweiler to Houston, Malik Jackson to Jacksonville and Danny Trevathan to Chicago.

The Broncos acquired the seven-year veteran from the Eagles on Friday, a move Denver general manager John Elway calls the first step toward replacing Manning. Apparently, it was to trade for Mark Sanchez, as first reported by 9news Denver's Mike Klis and confirmed by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Denver gives up a conditional draft pick in 2017 for Sanchez based on playing time.

"(Sanchez) brings veteran leadership & will compete", Elway said via Twitter. He spent the last couple seasons as a backup for the Philadelphia Eagles, finding sporadic success as a spot starter.

Sanchez, originally the No. 5 overall pick of the draft by the Jets in 2009, played in 13 games, with 10 starts for the Eagles in his two years with the team.

Hoyer remains on Houston's roster after signing a two-year contract before last season, but his five-turnover fiasco in the loss to the Chiefs made it clear that Houston needed a change at the position.

But Sanchez became expendable when the Eagles signed Chase Daniel to a three-year, $21 million contract Thursday.

Osweiler joins a team with Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt and receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who was third in the National Football League with 1,521 yards receiving last season. 

Denver remains tied to trade talks involving Colin Kaepernick.

With that defense, Sanchez directed the Jets to road postseason wins at Cincinnati, San Diego, Indianapolis and New England - defeating teams led by a who's who of standout quarterbacks: Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Those four seasons were at best mediocre, as Sanchez never completed more than 57 percent of his passes, never had a passer rating higher than 78.2, and had just 68 touchdowns compared to 69 interceptions. He still struggled with interceptions, however, tossing 11 compared to 14 touchdowns.
