Clinton focuses on general, while Sanders sticks to script

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton defeated rival Bernie Sanders in the SC primary on Saturday.

USA networks called the race for Clinton moments after polls closed in the Palmetto State, where the majority of Democratic voters are African-American, a voting bloc that she and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, have successfully courted for decades. With all precincts reporting, Clinton beat Sanders by almost 50 points, winning 73.5 percent to 26 percent.

Mrs Clinton's campaign hopes her strong showing in SC foreshadows similar outcomes in states such as Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Virginia that vote on Tuesday and have large minority populations. SC was not a state the Sanders campaign conceded; he had 8 offices in the state and some 200 paid staffers.

"We, tonight, have started Hillary Clinton on her way to the White House", said representative James E. Clyburn, the state's most powerful black Democrat, as he introduced Hillary at a victory rally here.

According to CNN exit polls, black voters made up more of the state's electorate compared to the 2008 primary. "Tomorrow, this campaign goes national", she declared.

"American has never stopped being great, our task is to make America whole", said Clinton at Greater Imani Cathedral of Faith.

"We think we've got a lot of work in front of us, but, George, I think we can win this thing", Sanders said.

After the win, Clinton appeared to look ahead to a general-election matchup with Republican front-runner Donald Trump, the billionaire whose campaign slogan is "Make America Great Again" and who promises to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

Three-quarters of voters said they want the next president to generally continue President Barack Obama's policies, while just 2 in 10 want the next president's policies to be more liberal.

Clinton will pick up most of South Carolina's delegates, widening her overall lead in AP's count.
