Donald Trump wins Kentucky GOP Caucus

Now, Clinton will need to carry a string of states to prove she has the Democratic race locked down.

Cruz, a favorite of the ultraconservative tea party movement, attributed his strong showing to conservatives coalescing behind his candidacy, calling it a "manifestation of a real shift in momentum". "The scream you hear, the howl that comes from Washington D.C., is utter terror at what we the people are doing together".

Mr Cruz now appears to be the only candidate who can stop Mr Trump, analysts say, after a week in which the Republican establishment did everything it could to attack Mr Trump, a NY tycoon.

Party leaders " including 2012 nominee Mitt Romney and 2008 nominee Sen. John McCain - are fearful a Trump victory would lead to a disastrous November election, with losses up and down the GOP ticket. Marco Rubio came up short, raising serious questions about his viability in the race.

An outlook on the Republican race
Some party elders, like 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have pleaded with voters against backing Trump. Rubio is trailing in the polls in MI - which offers the biggest delegate prize among primaries being held on Tuesday.

Mr Cruz also suggested it was time for other hopefuls, like Marco Rubio and John Kasich, to step aside.

Romney is remarkably unpopular among those supporting Trump in the Republican primaries and caucuses: only 21% of registered voters likely to participate in Republican primaries and caucuses who want Trump to be the party's nominee have a favorable opinion of Romney.

Trump won the Louisiana primary and Kentucky caucuses, splitting the Super Saturday contests with Cruz, who won caucuses in Kansas and Maine. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio had one win in Minnesota. "I would look at that as a reflection of how bad she is, not how bad Donald Trump is". Trump picked up at least 49, Rubio at least 13 and Kasich nine. It takes 2,383 delegates to win the nomination. "Even Trump, he'd have to win over half the remaining delegates to get there and he's not on pace to that now".

Underdogs found something to cheer in the latest run of presidential nomination contests.

Michigan, Mississippi primaries: Who is ahead, how many delegates at stake?
More than 60 percent, on the other hand, said Cruz is honest, empathetic, and does have the right experience and temperament. However, in the central part of the state, Trump dominates with 44 percent compared to Rubio's 22 percent of the vote.

Clinton earned 55 delegates to Sanders' 47. Now, Cruz has climbed to a more than two-to-one advantage over Rubio in the total delegate race.

Sanders's campaign tends to do better in states with large populations of white voters, while the former secretary of state has had more success in states where greater numbers of African-Americans participate.

The poll shows Rubio leading among Floridians who have already cast their ballots in early voting, while Trump does better with those who haven't voted yet.

Romney says he's not endorsing any candidate now, but might after March 15 when voters in some candidates' delegate-rich home states go to the polls. At a later rally in Jacksonville, Florida, he pleaded for support from the same city "that believed in me" in his successful Senate bid six years ago. Ted Cruz or Florida Sen. Do it today. Do it tomorrow....
