US investigates 420000 Ford F-150s for brake failure

The problem is "brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder to the brake booster", which could cause the master cylinder to fail.

New Ford F-150 pickups are displayed on the sales lot at Serramonte Ford on April 28, 2015 in Colma, California. As well, the brake warning lamp turns on in some cases, and in some cases the master cylinders reservoir loses fluid though no leak is visible.

Federal workers are investigating 420,000 trucks-models with six cylinder engines from 2013 and 2014.

The NHTSA says it has received 33 complaints about the F-150s brakes, triggering the government's investigation of the 2013 and 2014 F-150 models. Thirty-one (31) of the reports were received in the last 12 months, including 20 in the last 7 months.

John Cangany, a Ford spokesman, wrote in an e-mail that the automaker took "the safety of our customers very seriously and we will cooperate with NHTSA".

All of the complaints have involved trucks equipped with 3.5L engines.

The reports from drivers state the brake pedal could end up going completely to the floor with the trucks still failing to brake.

NHTSA investigators will check into how often the problem happens and how large it might be to decide whether a recall is necessary. The F-Series pickups accounts for 90 percent of Ford's global automotive profits.
