SpaceX targets Friday Falcon 9 liftoff at Cape Canaveral

SpaceX will have a fifth pop today at getting its SES-9 communications satellite mission off the ground from Cape Canaveral.

SpaceX attributed the first four scrubbed launches to problems with their liquid oxygen system, heavy winds and a boat straying too close to the launch zone. Last Sunday, the Falcon 9's onboard computers shut down the rocket's nine Merlin engines just after ignition due to a "low thrust alarm".

The 23-story rocket is carrying a communications satellite for Luxembourg-based SES SA, and SpaceX is aiming to bring the main stage of its rockets back to Earth so that it can refurbish and reuse them, something that would make launches much more cost-effective.

SpaceX SES-9 last launch on Super Tuesday had been scrubbed because of bad weather. SpaceX has been waiting for them to die down, and they now have.

"Given this mission's unique GTO (Geostationary Transfer Orbit) profile, a successful landing is not expected", according to the company, which has failed at least three times previously to successfully land the rocket on a barge.
