'Prince of Tides' author Pat Conroy dies at 70

Just a few weeks ago on February 15, Conroy announced on his Facebook page that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

"Conroy writes from his own experiences, as a child of a violent father", said NPR's Tom Vitale in a 1986 Morning Edition interview with the author.

He is survived by his wife, the novelist Cassandra King. "I had trouble getting people to believe me". He had an ambivalent love for his father, Donald Conroy, a U.S. Marine Corps colonel who could be a violent, abusive man. Donald Conroy inspired The Great Santini (1976), a thinly veiled family portrait that took its title from the patriarch's self-given nickname.

Even 30 years later, Conroy's determination to crack his identity hadn't stopped.

Instead of a military career, Conroy became a teacher on isolated, impoverished Daufuskie Island, where many of his students were illiterate and direct descendants of slaves. Barbra Streisand directed and starred in the film adaptation of The Prince of Tides, opposite Nick Nolte as the novel's protagonist. "'He will be cherished as one of America's favorite and bestselling writers, and I will miss him terribly, ' Talese said".

The Associated Press notes that four of Conway's "novels of troubled relationships and dysfunctional families" were turned into movies, including his best-known books, The Great Santini and The Prince Of Tides.

Conroy was married three times and had two daughters.

Meanwhile, former Republican nominee Mitt Romney launched a counter-offensive against Trump from his home in Salt Lake City. Trump and Rubio, who exchanged the sharpest exchanges of the night, went on to charge each other with being con artists.
