The Sad, Embarrassing Spectacle of Chris Christie's Donald Trump Endorsement

Mar 03, 2016, 10:24

Chris Christie took to the podium to introduce Donald Trump after Trump's impressive showing on Super Tuesday.

Chris Christie has always been loathed by New Jersey journalists.

Trump was heard on a microphone telling Christie to get on a plane and go home this weekend, and Christie was pressed Sunday in an ABC interview about his disagreement with Trump on his proposed ban on Muslims.

Assemblywoman Amy Handlin, another Monmouth County Republican, had the same view on both Christie and Trump.

"He needs to choose".

A Washington Post opinion writer said that Christie, once beloved as a straight-talker who got things done, had ruined his reputation. Christie had himself withdrawn prematurely from the presidential campaign, having pulled out from the race after the New Hampshire polls. "But it's completely different if you are simply now on the campaign trail to support another candidate, and we have a lot of work to do".

Christie also found himself deflecting questions about whether Trump's proposal to build a wall on the Mexican border was racist, even though he himself had made fun of the wall at nearly every campaign town hall he held. Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, John Kasich and Donald Trump had the opportunity to showcase their arguments and further their ideas before the Super Tuesday results on March 1, that showed Trump leading with the most wins.

"ThAt led to the social media hashtag, #FreeChrisChristie".

As a presidential candidate, his bullish, pigheaded persona was overshadowed by the very man whom he now endorses - perhaps the only man on earth more bullish and pigheaded than Christie. But after stepping out of the political ring, Christie endorsed Trump on February 26, declaring him the candidate most likely to beat Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

"He should decide what he wants to do", Bateman said of the Republican governor. One poll seemed to reflect that spirit: Christie's approval rating among registered New Jersey voters has dipped by 6 percent his endorsement last week, falling to 27 percent, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University poll.
