Appeals court overturns Apple's $120 million patent win against Samsung

The jury said Apple infringed one patent and not the other; the appeals court agreed.

"The end result in this case is a huge moral victory for Samsung", said Brian Love, a Santa Clara University law professor.

In addition to the court's final decision, the number of patents involved in the case was gradually trimmed down during the lengthy litigation process.

Samsung has been alleged for infringing on Apple's quick links (the functionality that allows one to make phone calls from numbers seen on screen, among other things), slide-to-unlock, and auto-correct patents.

Samsung and Apple have largely ended their ongoing patent animosity, but the earlier cases are still winding their way through the courts. Almost $99 million of the damages related to the quick links infringement. Things changed in favour of Samsung on Friday when the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, DC overturned a decision against Samsung. Samsung appealed that decision, and today, a USA appeals court overturned the ruling.

A specific Apple vs Samsung case to do with some software patents (including slide-to-unlock, if you remember that one) ended up with Samsung having to pay $120 million to Apple.

Apple and Samsung have been battling it out for years.

The Federal Circuit ruling is something of a reversal in the second trial appeals. The appeals court ruled that this was invalid due to prior art.

The three-judge panel of the Federal Circuit unanimously ruled in favor of Samsung.

As archrivals, Samsung and Apple, decided in 2014 to drop all patent disputes outside the United States, marking a partial ceasefire in a seemingly relentless legal war between the world's two largest smartphone makers.
