Rock slide shuts down I-75 in both directions in Tennessee

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced late Monday it had awarded a $2.9 million emergency contract to a company for removal of the rock slide debris, stabilization of the slope from which the rock slide broke away and repairs to the highway. He added that motorists should be prepared to use detours and alternate routes. Nagi says crews will spend the weekend evaluating the slide.

All four lanes of traffic were closed Friday as a slope slide began near mile marker 142, approximately one mile north of the Oneida/Huntsville exit. Exit 160 is at Jellico to the north (scroll up on the map).

All traffic continues to be detoured, with message boards in place along I-75 to alert motorists to the closure.

While southbound traffic was allowed back on I-75 at Exit 141 in Caryville, the exit remained closed for northbound traffic, with TDOT citing concerns about having commercial vehicles traveling both directions on narrow, winding S.R. 297 through Elk Valley.

Wide-load traffic traveling south should take Exit 29 in Corbin, Ky. and follow U.S. Highway 25E into Tennessee and onto Interstate 81 at Exit 8.

Northbound traffic is being diverted at exit 134 at Caryville and southbound traffic is being diverted at exit 160 at Jellico.
