Pregnant women in American Samoa warned over unprotected sex

A Philadelphia woman who traveled to the Caribbean has contracted the Zika virus, the Philadelphia Department of Health announced Monday.

Statewide, there have been 44 confirmed cases of Zika virus infection, state health officials reported, including six in Broward County.

Zika is most commonly spread from the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito.

The general illness caused by Zika is typically gone within a week and carries common symptoms of: fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. "It is a case with these particularities in how the sickness was transmitted, which was through sex", said Francisco Fortuna, Cordoba City Health Minister.

The woman is the second travel-associated Zika virus infection confirmed in Washington state, but her case raises worries because of a strongly suspected link between the virus and a severe birth defect known as microcephaly.

The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed about 150 Zika virus cases nationwide, mostly involving worldwide travelers. Infection with the virus also may infrequently cause a nervous system disease in adults called Guillain-Barre. However, women infected with the virus have given birth to children with serious birth defects, including brain damage.

A spokesman for ABTA, the travel association, said pregnant women due to travel to any of the destinations affected should seek medical advice from their GP. Mosquitoes become infected after biting an infected person and then can transmit the virus to other people through bites. "Of the other women, one also had an abortion, two miscarried, two delivered healthy babies, and two are still pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which reported the nine cases..."

Zika virus is not particularly new. Couples who are trying to get pregnant and have returned from Zika-affected areas are encouraged to consult with their health care provider.
