NASA's Scott Kelly returns to Earth after 340 days in space

Mar 02, 2016, 21:57

A capsule carrying the NASA's astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko has touched down in Kazakhstan after they spent almost a year aboard the International Space Station - setting a record for space flight by an American and making a step towards human travel to Mars.

Last March, Kelly flew to the International Space Station and carried out- among other things- countless experiments to study the effects of long-duration trips in space.

View of Mikhail Kornienko through the window of the Soyuz-TMA-18M. "I've no idea why you guys are so bundled up", NASA TV reported him as saying as he sat upright in a chair on the steppe in temperatures just below zero.

Now, the "Human Research Programme" is building on that foundation by proposing more worldwide collaboration on future one-year space station missions. The mission was in cooperation between NASA and Russian space administration.

Scott Kelly hadn't been on land for 340 days when his spaceship landed in the Kazakhstan desert on March 1, and although he looked a little shaky in the unfamiliar atmosphere, he was smiling and optimistic while hoisted from the ship.

Unfortunately, one of the most entertaining aspects about space is also the most harmful to the human body: microgravity.

While there, Kelly has sampled space veggies and coaxed zinnias to bloom in weightlessness, walked in space three times and endured two failed cargo ship delivery missions.

The latest one-year space subjects quickly parted company, Kelly flying back to Houston and Kornienko to Star City, Russia, near Moscow.

They will compare his health with that of his identical twin brother, Mark Kelly who is a former astronaut.

Spending 340 days in space could affect a person's vision and bones, but Kelly said last week that physically, he feels pretty good. Scott Kelly has now spent a total 520 cumulative days in space, over four flights.

The part of the "Year in Space" mission where the astronauts are actually living in space may be over, but the experiment will continue.

Kelly and his Russian roommate for the past year, Mikhail Kornienko, checked out of the International Space Station on Tuesday night, US time.

More than anything else, his constant tweets from space have made the day for many earthlings, including those in India.

After returning from his lengthy stint in space Kelly was clearly in high spirits as he was lowered to the ground by burly Russian rescue workers at the landing site.

Kelly broke an American record for longest time spent in space, but the ultimate mileage goes to Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov, who spent 437 days on board the Mir space station in 1994 and 1995.
