Jordan raid said to be targeting militants kills 5

Officials say a Jordanian security officer and four wanted men were killed in raids reportedly targeting militants in Jordan's third largest city.

A Jordanian security officer was killed during clashes near a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Jordan on Tuesday, Arabic-language media is reporting.

Specialised security forces carried out a raid against a group of armed people, described as outlaws at around 7:00 pm and lasted until 3:00am. The roads leading to the area was sealed off by police.

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have meanwhile fled across the border and are now living in Jordan, some in refugee camps. The camps' squalid conditions have always been a fertile ground for militants. Some of those expressing support for the group on social media have been sentenced to prison.

It was not immediately clear whether the militants had links to the Syrian conflict. One source said they were suspected of being from Islamic State; another did not specify.

The Public Security Directorate said confrontations began earlier Tuesday and were continuing in the evening.
