Colorado confirms 1st 2 cases of Zika virus; Both recovered

The first case of Zika virus in Chicago was confirmed on Monday morning, marking the fifth confirmed case of the virus in IL. Doctors at Presence St. Joseph Hospital on the north side say a woman tested positive after returning home from Colombia in January. Officials say she recovered on her own.

The Zika virus - a disease caused by a virus carried by the Aedes mosquitoes - has seen a drastic uptick of cases across the United States over the past few weeks.

Zika outbreaks are occurring in many countries throughout Central America, South America and the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Less commonly, Zika can also be transmitted by sexual activity, in a similar manner to an STD, or from affected mother to her unborn child.

Community and Public Health physician Dr Daniel Williams said the symptoms of Zika, which is spread by mosquitos not found in New Zealand, were usually mild lasting for several days to a week after being bitten.
