CDC Investigating 14 Reports of Sexually Transmitted Zika Virus in the US

CDC also issued a Health Advisory Notice on Tuesday, as the new reports suggest sexual transmission may be a more likely means of transmission for Zika than previously considered.

However, the CDC now says these 14 possible cases of sexual transmission underscore the importance of practicing safe sex for couples in which the woman is pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

"Like previously reported cases of sexual transmission, these cases involve a possible transmission of the virus from men to their sex partners", the CDC wrote in announcing the new cases.

Several of the cases include pregnant women, which is worrisome considering Zika has been linked with a birth defect called microcephaly. After that, health officials advised men who traveled to affected areas to abstain from sex or use condoms during sex.

Zika virus is primarily spread through mosquitoes.
