Police in Aberdeen and Inverness said they had received a large number of calls about a flash of light seen at about 18:45.

The skies across eastern and northern Scotland lit up in spectacular fashion this evening.

SNP politician Jackie Hendry also tweeted that she spotted the white flash in the sky.

Startled social media users took to Twitter to report seeing the suspected meteor, saying it caused a loud boom as well. Other people said their houses shook. Most tweets have come from around Perthshire, Angus, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

Police Scotland said it had been unable to ascertain the cause of the noise and the Met Office said the weather was not conducive to thunder and lightning.

Jenni Morrison caught the flash on her dashboard camera as she was driving down the A944 in Aberdeenshire at around 6.45pm.
