Hall of Fame winger Andy Bathgate dies at 83

Andy Bathgate, a Hall of Fame hockey player who spent much of his 18-year career with the New York Rangers as one of the most prolific goal scorers of his day, died February 26 in Brampton, Ont. He was 83.
How fitting that both Bathgate and Plante would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Class of 1978, joined in the shrine as their lives have been inextricably linked for a single puck in one game going on six decades ago.
His cause of death was not disclosed.
A dynamic shooter, Bathgate was the NHL's MVP for the 1958-59 season when he scored 40 goals and had 88 points.
Vonn wraps up eighth World Cup downhill title
Italy's Nadia Fanchini won her first career World Cup downhill as her teammate Daniela Merighetti finished third. Yurkiw finished fourth and Laurenne Ross of the United States was fifth for a third consecutive downhill.
NY traded Bathgate to the Maple Leafs in 1964.
Bathgate was born in Winnipeg, Canada and by the time he retired he had played 17 seasons for four teams, the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins.
When he was dealt to Toronto in one of the biggest trades in National Hockey League history, Bathgate held every major Rangers scoring record. "Andy was an All-Star, a Hart Trophy victor, a Stanley Cup champion and a Hall of Famer who earned the respect of the entire hockey world". His record-setting stretch of goals in 10 straight games (11 goals) during the 1962-63 season still stands today. "The NHL family sends heartfelt condolences to his family and his many friends".
He had 40 points in his first full season in 1954-'55 and emerged as a star the following year with a 66-point campaign.

Not many people know that former Montreal Canadien Jacques Plante's donned a goalie mask as a result of Andy Bathgate.
Mr. Bathgate was considered one of the Rangers' all-time greats.
During his time with the New York Bathgate laced up his skates in 719 games and tallied 272 goals and 457 assists. Bathgate had nine points in 14 playoff games for Toronto that year to help the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup.
The Rangers retired Bathgate's No. 9 in 2009, putting his number alongside Adam Graves' No. 9 in the Madison Square Garden rafters.
