US Flies F-22 Fighters Over South Korea After North's Rocket Launch

Following Pyongyang's rocket launch, Seoul announced it will begin talks with Washington on deploying a sophisticated USA missile defense system in South Korea and that the allies' upcoming springtime military drills will be the biggest ever.

Four days after the DPRK's nuclear detonation last month, the USA military sent a long-range B-52 bomber, capable of delivering nuclear bombs, over South Korea's airspace from the US air base in Guam. North Korea has previously dismissed such views.

A formation of four U.S. F-22 stealth fighters swept through the skies of South Korea on Wednesday as the militaries of South Korea and the USA flexed their muscles against North Korea following its nuclear and missile tests.

Some in the worldwide community now believe that North Korea will never abandon its nuclear program, and say the only way to negotiate with the North is to accept it as a nuclear power and work on a freeze, and then gradual arms reductions.

The United States often sends powerful warplanes to South Korea in times of tension with North Korea.

"China may agree to narrow sanctions targeting certain individuals and entities, but not those that could remotely threaten to destabilize the country or regime, or turn North Korea into an openly hostile neighbor", she said.

In addition, the US recently dispatched a nuclear-powered submarine to the peninsula.

OPLAN 5015 is a renewed contingency plan preparing the allies for preemptive attacks against North Korea in the event that signs of a possible North Korean invasion into the South are detected.

In North Korea, leaders have rockets named after them. Pyongyang has long accused Washington and Seoul of agitating for its collapse.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Monday that the missile defense system would "directly violate" China's strategic security interests, and condemned "relevant countries" for using the Korea peninsula issue to undermine those interests. "Aiming the point of a sword back at us and splitting us up are things that must not take place", she said.

The Crisis Group's Xie said China likely aims to do just enough in terms of sanctions to placate the South Korean government, and convince Seoul to once again drag its feet over the THAAD deployment, as it has done for years.

In response to the rocket launch, South Korea decided last Wednesday to stop operations at the Kaesong Industrial Zone, which Seoul saw as a key source of hard currency for Pyongyang to develop nuclear and missile programmes. So unless China goes along with significant new sanctions, North Korea will be able to absorb Kaesong's closure and keep its economy hobbling along.
