Harper Lee laid to rest at private funeral in Alabama hometown

Friends and family from around the corner and across the country gathered here Saturday (Feb 21, Singapore time) to pay final respects to Harper Lee, the author whose Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about racial inequality in the South during the Jim Crow era inspired generations of readers. Afterward, her casket was taken by silver hearse to an adjacent cemetery where her parents, A.C. Lee and Frances Finch Lee, and sister, Alice Lee, are buried. It was a 2006 speech he gave, entitled, "Atticus inside ourselves".

Lee, known here as Nelle, was a Methodist, and Alice Lee held a number of prominent positions with the church and was also its lawyer.

"I think the retrospective will be more useful than what was said during her lifetime, because there are a lot of things we can get down to that were impossible before", Lee's friend Wayne Flynt, an Alabama-based historian, told The Associated Press.

The southern town was home to childhood friends Truman Capote and Lee, giving rise to its self-given nickname of the literary capital of the South.
