As many as 4,400 babies in Brazil have been born with microcephaly, in which babies have abnormally small heads and brains, to women who may have been bitten by mosquitoes carrying the virus.

"Finally we're seeing a lack of other explanatory causes, not to say that there still aren't other causes, not to say that it may not be associated or Zika would be a co-factor still but there's still an increasing accumulation of evidence now that these phenomena may be associated", he said.

Separately, the Detroit Medical Center launched a Zika hotline this week for pregnant women to help expectant mothers with a history of travel to Zika-affected regions.

The virus has also been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome, a potentially fatal autoimmune disorder that can cause temporary paralysis, with increased numbers of cases being reported in Brazil, El Salvador, and French Polynesia, which experienced a Zika outbreak in 2013 and 2014.

While the day-biting mosquitoes that carry the virus are not found in MI - making it extremely unlikely for an insect-borne outbreak to occur here - health officials are taking precautions nonetheless.
