Athletics Kenya CEO to stand aside for 21 days over bribery allegations

Last November, Isaiah Kiplagat, David Okeyo and Joseph Kinyua, who were in charge of AK, were asked to step aside by the IAAF Ethics Commission for 180 days to allow investigation into claims of bribery and abetting doping.

"The allegations have caused me a lot of mental anguish", he wrote in a letter to Athletics Kenya, seen by AFP on Wednesday.

The chief executive of Athletics Kenya (AK), Isaac Mwangi, is to temporarily step aside pending an investigation into claims that he asked for money to reduce the doping bans of two athletes, according to Reuters.

Jack Tuwei, the AK president, said the newly formed Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) would conduct the investigation into allegations against Mwangi and report findings in two weeks.

In the AP interview, Sakari and Manunga alleged that Mwangi asked them each for a $24,000 bribe in an October 16 meeting, but that they could not raise the money.

Kenya last week missed a deadline to prove to WADA that it was doing enough to combat doping and faces being declared a non-compliant nation, which could lead to a global ban. The two ended up receiving four-year suspensions after their samples tested positive to banned diuretic furosemide.

In his letter to acting federation president Jackson Tuwei, dated Monday, Mwangi asked for AK's disciplinary panel to investigate.

"I m anxious to clear my name even as I reserve my right to pursue other legal remedies available to me such as action for libel and defamation", said Mwangi.

Mwangi's leave was voluntary and started Monday, Tuwei told a news conference on Tuesday in Nairobi.

"If cleared, (Mwangi) will come back", said Tuwei.

"He hopes that this will vindicate him because he feels he is innocent", said the AK executive committee member.

He added the IAAF Ethics Commission had written to them inquiring on what measures were being taken to address the sensational allegations made against the CEO by the two runners with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) also keen on the matter.

"They will of course invite anybody else they wish to give evidence", he said.

"WADA will of course require more detailed information of these allegations from those concerned so that we can determine whether this is a matter for us to investigate of the IAAF Ethics Committee as part of its own inquiries".

Three other senior officials at Athletics Kenya were suspended previous year by the IAAF while an investigation took place into allegations of "subversion" of the anti-doping process in Kenya and "improper diversion" of funds received from Nike.
