Obama's clean power plan gets shelved by corporatists on the Supreme Court
While those on each side of this debate do not agree on the actual decision of the Supreme Court, they do both say putting President Obama's Clean Power Plan on hold came as a surprise. (Read Andrew Rice's 2015 New York Magazine profile of Tribe to understand the legal strategy that won this verdict.) The 5-4 decision, which ran along familiar partisan lines, does not kill the administration's power plan. It gives state governments a deadline of summer 2016 to submit plans to the EPA for how they will comply with the rule or to request a one- or two-year extension.
Even though Oklahoma is involved in the case against the EPA, the Clean Power Plan would likely have little impact on the state, as StateImpact has reported.
"We disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to stay the Clean Power Plan while litigation proceeds", White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement on Wednesday. "But most importantly, this Supreme Court decision is a win for coal miners and their families".

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton argued that the EPA's proposed reductions on carbon emissions are impossible for existing power plants to meet and would force their closure. Rather, it's about protecting coal-mining jobs already endangered by competition from plentiful stores of cheap natural gas unleashed by the shale fracking boom.
Federal circuit courts are expected to hear arguments in the various challenges this summer.
