White Sox sign starting pitcher Mat Latos

The Chicago White Sox signed veteran pitcher Mat Latos to a one-year contract.

Although hidden behind the 4.48 ERA with the Marlins and a 6.66 ERA with the Dodgers, Latos put up an OK 3.72 FIP between his stops and picked up 1.5 fWAR in 116⅓ innings.

Latos, once a 4.3 bWAR pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds (2012) will now be in his fifth different uniform in two years. It was the best season of the seven-year career for Latos. Before last season Latos had 90 of fluid drained out of his knee and affected his play. In 2014, he was 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA. With rumors circulating that the White Sox were going to attempt to bring back ChiSox legend Mark Buehrle, they chose a safer, and relatively cheaper option.

The Chicago White Sox signed Mat Latos in what looks to be a good match of a team and player looking to rebound. He was part of a multi-player trade right before the trade deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers where he only made five starts before being designated for assignment. Latos put little work in the 2014 offseason which lead to a poor 2015 season.

If Latos pitches like he did pre-2015, this deal could be a steal for the White Sox as Latos could fill in nicely in the number four slot of the rotation behind Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and Carlos Rodon. The first is obviously unless he performs incredibly poorly in spring training, he will replace Erik Johnson at the end of the rotation. However, Latos' arrival will either push Johnson back to the minors or John Danks back to the bullpen. The Sox have have guys in the club house that will be able to make sure that Latos assumes his role, and at the same time Latos is on a one year audition for the rest of his career at this point so I can't imagine him acting out in the club house and risking his future in Major League Baseball.
