Search Continues for Survivors of Taiwan Quake

Though the building was not listed as one of Taiwan's risky structure, Chen Wei-zen, Taiwan's interior minister, promised that an investigation will soon be conducted regarding the issue.

She had been trapped since a magnitude 6.4 natural disaster toppled her 17-story apartment building early Saturday morning.

Rescuers on Sunday found signs of live within the remains of a high-rise residential building that collapsed in a powerful, shallow quake in southern Taiwan that killed over a dozen people and injured hundreds.

The official death toll from the quake rose to 38, with more than 100 people missing.

The other survivor pulled from the rubble earlier Monday was Tsao Wei-ling, 45, who is in stable condition. According to the BBC, most of the dead were inside the 17-floor Weiguan Jinlong apartment building.

CNN is told there are no plans in the near future for Cuban-owned planes to land in the US under this agreement. The agreement allows for 20 United States flights to Havana per day, in addition to 10-15 charter flights.

Rescuers said the woman had survived by lying underneath her husband, whose body shielded her from a collapsed beam, he died in the quake. A search was continuing for five other members of her family trapped inside.

Reuters reported that Tainan Mayor William Lai visited a funeral home where he announced that rescue efforts were already categorized under the "third stage". More than 100 people are still believed to be buried within the collapsed high rise apartment block, a 1990s construction. While the rescue operations are still underway and organizations have been working relentlessly, the hope to find more survivors is fading away with each passing hour.

"Uncle, I am very thirsty", the girl told her rescuers. "She shook her head".

Rescuers continued to scramble over the twisted wreck of the building as numbed family members stood around, waiting for news of missing relatives.

A 40-year-old man, identified by local media as Lee Tsung-tian, is lifted by a crane out of the rubble by rescue workers at the collapsed Wei-Kuan complex in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan.

President-elect Tsai Ing-wen, who will take the reins in May, said the new government would prioritise building safety following the disaster.

Rescuers eventually dug a hole beneath him and pulled him out. Most cause little or no damage, although a 7.3-magnitude quake, the strongest to hit Taiwan in about 100 years, left more than 2,000 people dead in 1999.

Taiwan's official Central News Agency says nine buildings were destroyed in the quake, all of them in the historic city of Tainan.
