Corbyn Hit By Second Post Reshuffle Resignation

Jan 07, 2016, 00:31

Controversial Labour MP Emily Thornberry who was sacked after sneering at a white van parked outside a family home has been appointed shadow defence secretary as Jeremy Corbyn's shambolic reshuffle continues.

Ms Eagle was in favour of renewing Trident, putting her at odds with Mr Corbyn, who has argued that the more than £100 billion (€137 billion) cost to replace the country's deterrent could be better used. The Labour Party is undergoing a review of its policy on Trident, which would have been chaired by Eagle and former mayor of London Ken Livingstone, who is also a Trident-sceptic, but will now be led by Livingstone and Thornberry.

After more than 30 hours of wrangling, Mr Corbyn sacked two senior figures for "disloyalty" and installed a Trident opponent in the key shadow defence brief.

Mr Reynolds, MP for the Greater Manchester constituency of Stalybridge and Hyde, said: "I think there is a danger that we might become too London centric - that's a regular complaint from Labour party members in my area - not just limited to Jeremy's administration, I can say that's a regular complaint that comes up".

He also angered the Labour leader with an interview on Sky News' Murnaghan programme in which he criticised Mr Corbyn for taking part in the protests at the Conservative Party Conference.

Doughty, a shadow foreign affairs minister, who had raised objections with Corbyn about Stop the War's reaction to the Paris attacks in November, announced his resignation on live television.

"I don't accept a deliberate decision was taken to ignore the Jewish community because we were trying to seek somehow more important votes elsewhere, but I think that either through neglect or, frankly, in some instances incompetence, we mishandled our relationship with the Jewish community".

Certainly he has neutralised the internal criticism around the Shadow Cabinet table: Hilary Benn can no longer speak his mind; Pat McFadden and Michael Dugher are out.

In a parliamentary debate last November following the attacks on Paris by militant Islamic gunmen, McFadden said that placing the blame for terror attacks on western foreign policy risked stripping those who carried out such attacks of their responsibility.

Appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain, John McDonnell dismissed speculation over Mr Benn's position as "a lot of hype" and compared Mr Corbyn to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

As the reshuffle talks began on Monday Mr Corbyn moved journalists away from his office telling them: "Excuse me guys do you mind not hanging around outside my office door, could you all leave please".

Mr Corbyn himself has expressed concerns about pro-privatisation legislation passed by the European Union, as well as the threat of workers' rights being watered down.

As a Labour/Co-op MP and rail minister, Mr Reynolds was in a position to support the Co-operative Party's agenda for a "People's Railway" within the shadow government.

Can you confirm Michael Dugher has been sacked? I'm not going to comment on the reshuffle. I had well publicised differences with him on foreign policy and national security... but I recognised the mandate that Jeremy had been given by the party.
