Chicago lawyer resigns after judge rules he hid evidence

Jan 07, 2016, 00:23

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is on the defensive again, dealing with the fallout from a judge's opinion accusing a top city lawyer of hiding evidence in another case involving a fatal police shooting.

Jones, who was nicknamed "Bettie Boo", had celebrated Christmas at the New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, and after the service told her family that she was determined to recommit herself to her faith.

The five children of a woman who was shot to death by Chicago police have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

The payments come during nearly daily protests over police treatment of minority suspects, following the release of a video in late November showing a white police officer fatally shooting a black teenager 16 times. On Tuesday, he said there was "zero tolerance" for anyone representing Chicago in a courtroom for not upholding professional standards.

A lawyer or Pinex's family says Marsh's conduct speaks to a bigger issues within the city.

But despite his reform efforts and firing of the city's police superintendent, Emanuel, a Democrat, continues to face criticism from his constituents and now, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Jordan Marsh, a senior city Corporation counsel, resigned after the judge's accusation.

Resulting protests have roiled the nation's third-largest city with calls for both Emanuel and Alvarez, who is running for re-election this year, to step down as the U.S. Justice Department conducts a civil rights investigation into the Chicago Police Department. Pinex sued the city after her son was killed by police in 2011 and on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, a judge...

The narrative of events told by Mosqueda and his partner, Officer Gildardo Sierra, held that their dispatcher had described an Oldsmobile sedan with a and armed occupants inside - evidence given as the reason the officers pulled Pinex over in the first place, and why they approached his vehicle with their guns drawn. The officer involved, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with first-degree murder just hours before the video's release. About halfway through the trial Marsh admitted, in the absence of the jury, that he had neglected to turn over a recording of the broadcast that actually aired over the officers' Zone 6 radios the evening Pinex was killed.

"There is a culture there of, 'We are protecting the good guys, police, against bad guys and so we should be able to bend the rules to protect them", said Hamilton.

Emanuel said he won't step down and now there is no law that allows for him to be recalled.

Emanuel made the remarks at a West Side press conference called to talk about the CTA's expansion of it's "Second Chance" program - a program that gives non-violent offenders jobs working with the CTA.
